Based on a previous post of mine from last year, you can probably guess I am pretty happy about today's events. It's great that an old school, hard nosed player won the award. I'd have loved to see Morneau get it but honestly, Pedroia and Youkilis both deserved it more this year. Personally, I think you could even make more of a case for Mauer then you can Morneau. The final vote for the top four was Pedroia 317, Morneau 257, Youkilis 201 and Mauer 188. Considering Pujols won the NL MVP, I must say I'm very pleased all around.

The Sox and the Rox
I belong to a group called SOSH. The best way to describe it would be to say that if you're a Red Sox enthusiast, it's the quintessential online membership to have.
It's the kind of place where you could potentially see a post called "The detailed statistical analysis of all 653 of Mike Lowell's at bats this season," where the point of the post would be to justify that Lowell should be batting fourth, instead of his typical fifth position in the lineup, vs right handed sinker ball pitchers.
It's ridiculous.
To join, I had to make my case to some of the leaders of the site (which I did in 2003). The only way to get accepted (at least at the time I joined) was to get someone in a power position to back you up. Needless to say, not being a Fenway junkie or a even Boston resident made it a difficult process to convince anyone to bring me aboard.
None the less, I got in and I definitely enjoy being a part of it.
Anyways, one of the members has a small picture on his page holding up a banner that I think is just fantastic and I wanted to share it. It have officially adopted it as my own:
"FENWAY IS MY GRACELAND"
Also, now that the World Series is set I figure it's time to share my bracket. Some people have seen it already but I wanted to document it here on Vox. Other then those darn Cubbies, I've done pretty well.

It's hard to pick against the Rockies right now, but my best guess is BoSox in six.

39 (Greenwell) ~ 7 (Nixon) ~ 15 (???)
Picking a favorite Red Sox is not something I take lightly. In the 20+ years I have followed the team I have had two favorite players (Mike Greenwell and Trot Nixon).
When Trot was not signed back this last offseason I knew I had a important task in front of me. I needed a new favorite and it's taken me nearly the entire regular season to determine who it is.
Watching the Red Sox/Yankees series this weekend has helped solidify the decision.
Welcome to some exclusive company Dustin Pedroia.

A Trot down memory lane
While my heart will forever be in Minnesota first, it's hard to deny the fact that I have a special place for the town of Boston.
One of the biggest reasons for my love is the Red Sox (though it really is much deeper then that). In my two trips there (1998 & 1999), I was fortunate enough to attend five BoSox games (two vs the Yankees). I even strongly considered moving there for the summer of 2000.
Since 1986, when I first started following the BoSox, I've had two favorite players. For about a decade each, those players were Mike Greenwell and Trot Nixon. Both were mid-level talents on teams filled with superstars. Neither are your prototypical favorite player. But, I don't think anyone is surprised by my choices either. To paraphrase Secondhand Lions, both players always went out with their boots on (i.e my kind of player). Trot's nickname is even Dirtdog and he is as old school as any player today with his high stirrups and by being the only player I know of who still puts his ball cap in his back right pants pocket during his at-bats. I LOVE IT.
I'm saddened by this for two major reasons: Trot will always be a Red Sox to me and I now have no one on the team that I am personally attached to any longer. Not only that, but the team as a whole is no longer a group of players I am overly excited to follow...as it has been in years past.
Who knows, maybe I'll get excited about the Greek God of Walks or someone else that I am not expecting to. But on the surface, it appears to have the makings of a blah season in Beantown for me.

It has recently hit me that Trot's thirteen years (he was drafted by Boston in 1993) with the team are now over. The oddest part of all this is that I am going to have to see him in a different uniform for the first time in his career.
