Where is my mind?

I had a softball double header last night (i.e. if you saw yesterday's post you'll know I am probably not doing well in parent of the year voting at the moment).

The craziest part of the night was running into a friend from NDSU who was the third baseman on the first team we played.

I hadn't seen him in almost a decade so it was nice catching up with him (his daughter's first birthday was last night).

As we were talking he told me that out of sheer coincidence he had told a story about me a week ago.

I played softball with him in intramurals at school and in one of the games he was playing left field and I was playing left center field.  Earlier in the inning he had hurt his arm.

After the injury, the next batter hit the ball to him as well and he made a diving catch.  I was backing him up and since he couldn't throw the ball he flipped it to me.  I proceeded to throw the runner on 3rd out at home trying to tag up.

From what he was saying I must have made a long throw or something as, for whatever reason, this was a vivid memory in his head still.

For me, nothing.  I don't remember it at all.

More then anything, my point in all this is that I have forgotten so many things from my past as I have gotten older.  It's not uncommon for me to hear a story told (which I may even be significantly involved in) that I have little or no memory of.

Rory, on the other hand, can tell you what he was wearing on June 3, 1983 (maybe that's a slight exaggeration but you get my point).

Have I run out of room in my brain and now memories are falling out?

I know I am not as active as I once was but I use to have such a good memory.  Maybe the lack of physical activity affects memory retention more then I thought.

All I know is that right now I am still in my twenties and if my memory is already this bad maybe I just need to go pick up a copy of Surfer Rosa and embrace this.

The Ugly Mug

I was recently decided to play softball this summer.  I subbed for a team in Farmington a few times last year and they asked me to play full time with them.  At first I graciously declined but Gina talked me into playing.  Our friend Justin is now coaching the team so that helped with the decision, as well as the fact that his wife Erin and their two girls will likely be there most nights as well.

A local tavern named the Ugly Mug is going to sponsor the team.

Now that I'm officially on the team I am starting to get a little more excited about it.

Over the years, softball has treated me pretty well...I just haven't enjoyed it all that much.  I think I made the mistake of trying to substitute it for playing baseball (something I still miss incredibly).

I've only played sparingly (maybe six to eight games) since Tenacious D broke up in 2002 and I am hoping that this time around I can enjoy softball for what it is now that I have had time some subsantial away from it.

I can tell you this though...I do miss the smell of a ball field.  I am very much looking forward to that again.
