Last week I started reading Dan Brown's Angels & Demons on my way to and from work. I must say, I have very much enjoyed the book and I don't want to put it down. It has gotten me excited to read again. I've been reading but it's felt more like a chore recently for whatever reason.
So, yesterday I did something that was long overdue. I got myself a library card.
The girls were with me and Nattie was in awe of the place. I'm guessing with her love of books we will be there quite a bit in the future.
After I finish Angels & Demons this week, I want to start a book series and after some debate I decided that Clive Cussler's Pacific Vortex! will be what I request first. Hopefully I will get into it and continue to follow Dirk Pitt on all his adventures. I've been told the Vince Flynn books would work as well.
But, any suggestions on an adventure series that has some mystery/thriller to it would be welcomed.
I want to read a series that I feel like I am learning something from. The Cussler books are more about adventure and less about education. In reality, the Flynn books would probably fall more in the category I'm looking for.

I suggest Paperbag Princess, Stephanie's Ponytail and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading the His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass is the first book). It was incredible and I highly recommend it. I believe it meets all of your criteria listed above.
ReplyDeleteWhen I get Home I am Going to give you a book I finished during my flight rritten by a GREAT ESPN Baseball writer.
ReplyDeleteAlso, read Digital Fortress, by Dan Brown, I liked it better than DC and A & D.
I've never even heard of the series (though I have obviously heard of the Golden Compass). How is the reading, does it flow or is it choppy? For example, I like the Narnia books but Lewis' writing just kind of plots along. I never struggle with setting one of his books down. In A&D, I don't want to stop. Right now, I need books like that.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at Digital Fortress. I'll have to check that one out.
ReplyDeleteAnd...I am excited for baseball book.
I can't keep going on one series anyways. I like to break it up a bit.
Though the His Dark Materials books are always found in the "Young Adult" section they're well written and full of imagination. I found myself to be immediately sucked into the books and have since always wondered what shape my daemon would take. They remind me a lot of the Harry Potter books - fun, but dark.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you might want to check out The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte. I picked it up several years ago and if I remember correctly it fits your criteria.
Cool cool.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your opinion and I'll check it out. I loved the Potter Books (and don't mind dark) so those probably would be perfect.
Thanks for The Club Dumas suggestion too.
Also, if you're looking for something funny and light you might try Good Omens by Neil Gaiman (my favorite author) and Terry Pratchett. It's about the birth of the Antichrist and how heaven and hell are trying to prepare for the coming apocolypse despite being unaware that the baby was accidentally switched at birth.
ReplyDeleteI thought A&D was good - the only problem I had with it was the fact that it is almost identical to the Davinci Code.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't read it yet, the Dark Tower series by Stephen King is fantastic.
Intentionally, I haven't read or seen anything with the DaVinci Code. I always wanted to read Angels & Demons first. But, I've been surprised how many people who have recently told me that they like A&D a lot more. You're the first who has said that they are very similar.
ReplyDeleteI did a book report / presentation in 10th grade on The Gunslinger. I remember liking it. Good call.
Nice. I'm creating a list of authors to remember to check out. I'll add both of them. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteHow come no one is commenting on my awesome suggestions?! Unkind.
