The only thing I have to fear is fear itself

I had a dentist appointment this morning.  Turns out I have a cavity on an upper wisdon tooth.

I was given the option to have it removed or filled.  I decided to fill it (next week).

But, the more I think about it the more I am considering having it pulled along with all my other wisdon teeth.  My mouth holds them comfortably so I still have my full set of teeth.

However, even though I would be fine the idea of teeth being pulled from my mouth gives me the hebegebees.

It's an irrational fear, but a fear none the less.

It's odd too since I feel like I have a high threshold for pain.  For example (relating to my mouth even), I typically don't get novocain when I have a cavity filled.  I prefer the brief pain over how weird my mouth feels afterwords.

Who has had their wisdom teeth pulled?  How was it?

I'm being a wimp here aren't I?

  1. I had all four pulled, two were impacted. Yes it wasn’t a great experience, but in the long run it was a forgettable experience. Nothing too traumatizing.
My suggestion would be to pull them pulled. The bark is worse than the bite.

  2. i had all four pulled too - same as molly, two were impacted, two weren't.i'm sure i'm in the minority here, but i didn't ever have *any* pain from it. i remember sleeping off the anesthetic (they put me under) after i came home, waking up, and feeling fine.i guess i got a little grossed out when i'd run my tongue over the stitches, but that's it.so, yeah, i say yank 'em. it's better than possibly (probably) ending up with cavities in the rest of them in the future.(plus, if you go to the place i went, they give you a free pint of hagen daaz!)

  4. I had them taken out 4 years ago - I thought I would never have to have them removed, since I was 27 at the time and never had any problems with them - but then two of them started giving me trouble.
Its not that bad after the first 24 hrs - though I had uncontrollable hiccups off and on for about 3 weeks - that really was the worst part.
I had to have it done in 2 stages - I was a whimp and made them knock me out both times, even though it was really only necessary the second time.
I would suggest having it done - otherwise you might just be delaying the inevitable.

  5. I had mine removed and all four were impacted and growing in weird directions. I was put completely under but I happened to wake up halfway through the surgery. They quickly put me under again before I really knew what was happening. I was extra groggy the next day or two but the pain was never that bad.
My brother's surgery was even more tricky - pulling molars and cutting channels in the jaw so his wisdom teeth could slide down to take the place of the missing teeth - but he walked out of the office on his own and went back to work a couple of days later.
We both recovered pretty quickly (though we were both 19 when we had it done). I wouldn't worry about too much lag time.

  6. I was living at Dan's old place when I had mine out. I only had three. I was all excited to lay on the couch for a few days and just watch movies, but it turns out I felt fine after three hours or so. Very disappointing...
